LookFabuluxe SpotLight: The FAB Jhanelle Lewis October 16 2017, 5 Comments
1. At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion?
Funny you ask that, I just had this conversation with my daughter earlier today. I believe it was around 8/9. I used to visit my grandmother often and help her sew. I was always the creative child and worked well with arts and crafts. I decided I wanted to make my own clothing and be a fashion designer at the tender age of 10. I was in fifth grade at the time. I remember like it was yesterday because we had a project about what we wanted to become when we got older!
2. What or who inspires you:
The love for my children inspire me. I work so hard on my business to instill in my children that you too can work for yourself. You work hard while you’re in your prime that you can achieve anything you have a passion for. My children want for nothing and it is because of my hard work and determination.
3. How important is Fashion Week for you?
Fashion Week is very important for me and I try to participate in as many shows as I can.
4. Name the top three things in your styling kit that are must-haves:
I would say the top three things in my styling kit is a dope pair of shoes!! Haha I am a shoe hoarder. I must also have a nice pair of comfortable and stylish jeans and I would also say my favorite is a wide brim hat. I love hats.
5.What is next for your brand/business in 2017-2018?
The next HUGE thing for my brand in 2017-2018 is PARIS FASHION WEEK! I am literally in the process of finishing my ‘Insomnia’ bespoke collection as we speak. I will be showcasing for the first time in Paris on October 1, 2017 with the WALK Fashion Production showcase. I was honored to be apart of this company who specializes in branding small businesses like myself.
6. What advice would you share with those who are pursuing their dream:
Intern Intern INTERN.. I did not have a chance to intern to the Fashion companies like I wanted to coming out of college. I started working right after college to pay bills. The more time I was out of the spotlight , the more and more I forgot what I was taught in college. I fell off for a few years and had to self teach myself all over again. But I pushed myself to work on my business everyday after work until I started getting repeat clients. Once you have the experience and knowledge of how the industry works. The easier it will be to get into a great company. The more contacts you keep and in this industry. It’s who you know. Because as Heidi Klum would say “One day you’re in, the next day you are Out! You have to stay relevant to make it.
7. All time favorite designer?
I would say Coco Chanel. She’s always been such an inspiration to me. To this day her collection and memory is so significant, even the Millennials know who she is.. She is a huge inspiration to me forever and always.
